Finally, after many aborted attempts to get back to Shank these past few months, finally The Rock has come back...wait. Um. That's not right. Uh, yeah. Okay. So, I finally make it back to Shank Hall. I missed Christmas, New Year's, St. Pat's AND the show in February. What's wrong with me?! I'm glad I made it back in time as this was the final Shank show before the summer. Sooooooo, onwards!
Once more a show at Shank Hall and once more Pat takes to the stage backed by an Andy Warhol-esqe backdrop. But wait. This is a different Pat. No longer a drinker or a smoker. No longer does he curse or even drive in reverse. This is a different Pat! But not so different that he doesn't have time for "One More Song About Sex", no sir! And, unlike some of the people in the audience, Pat was not phoning tonight in, that's for sure. And of course I plan on doing something dumb tonight! I came to the show didn't I? Where else is it more fun to "Ruin My Life"? I have no idea where I'm going with this style of review but what the hell!? "Freudian Love Song"! Yup. Next it was a spring-time song I'm calling "By The Summertime I Was Gone". If that one has a different name I don't know it. That song was followed up by another song I don't know. How about "I Love You Anyway"? Yeah, that sounds good. Here's a song everyone knew, "Toast"! Though I was the only one who knew to shout "You go, Grandma!" Oh, well. And of course, everyone knows there's nothing better on a rainy night than the "Fuckbuddy Song". Through a little audience poll we found no one had or would admit to having a fuckbuddy. Love knows no distance in Pat's next song because, no matter what, "You're Only An Ocean Away". What's an ocean when it comes to love, huh? Rounding out the first set with "Imagine A Picture" complete with birthday wishes and plugging of cards, the entire rendition of "The Vince Lombardi Trophy Is Back In Title Town", a few choreographed dances and some hometown songs for Shawn Of The Dead, April (The month we are in), Mike/Sergei (one of a group of accountants taking a break from your tax preparing) and Jessie from Downtown. Of course there was also CMBANNAWCM with #5 being "Like A Virgin", #4 was hillbilly "Poppa Don't Preach", #3 = Justin Bieber (who will never be #2 or #1), #2 was of course "Sweet Caroline" and if you don't know #1 by now you need to get to a show.
Time for intermission, Beatles style!
Round 2 has Pat regretting his showing up as he lamented by saying "I Should Never Have Come To This Party". He got over this as he decided to take us camping and show us his "Monkey Paw" which summoned an American Idol contestant to close the song. The next song will be dubbed ?Think It Over? unless it already has a title. Normally when you hear a name in a song it?s not unusual to know someone with it but when it?s an uncommon name like ?Charmaine? and I actually know a Charmaine, that?s just odd. Speaking of uncommon names, another of the accountants brought Pat a drink. Her name was Tatiana. Of course, Pat had to tell her and all of us ?I Like Everything?, including sexy Russian accountants. Also in the audience tonight was a former regular, Robert. Who, due to marriage and children was renamed ?The Grown Up?. Pat must be on hard times because he asked The Grown Up ?Can I Move In With You?. It must just be a gag on the poor guy. With ?Hey Paddy!? of course comes deflowering of virgins and mixed in with the regular songs were some Easter songs (?I Want Candy? doesn?t count because it can be used for Halloween as well) and a performance of Pat?s Russian ballet for Tatiana. Next was a song about breaking up and hating each other! It had been a while since I heard ?Screw You?. Normally ?Screw You? jumps right into ?Sex & Beer? but not tonight! Tonight we got a real treat! Before Pat would give us his usual goodbye, he gave us the ?Long Goodbye?. Seriously, this is one of my favorite Pat songs. It?s just such a great and beautiful song and I was happy to have heard it live. And, as you know, 99.9% of Pat?s shows end the same way and that?s with ?Sex & Beer?. Though, with such a small crowd it took a while to get enough people on stage but we did end up with pretty close to 100% crowd participation on the dance so it?s all good.
Well, that?s it for me. No Shank until after the summer. Gonna have to see what other shows I can catch between now and then. Pat needs to get out here to Muskego more often too (I know there?s a June show but my availability is in question. Missed the last one due to catching my brother?s cold.) Later all!
